MAKE KIN NOT BABIES, λέει η Donna Haraway.
Ξεκινώ από τη Valie Export (γενν. 1940) και το 1. Tap and Touch Cinema (1968). Έξω η Valie Export!»
Το τεύχος του Angry Women το βρήκαμε στα σκουπίδια ένα πρωινό που περπατούσαμε σε μια γειτονιά του Μόντρεαλ μαζί με τη φίλη και συνεργάτη μου, Paola Pin, λίγο πριν ξεκινήσουμε το εργαστήρι The body as a sound post gender instrument, παρέα με τις Quimera Rosa το 2014.
2. Karen Finley (γενν. 1956), The Constant State of Desire (1996).
3. Yvonne Rainer (γενν. 1934), Hand Movie (1966). Η Ann Cvetkovich στο An Archive of Feelings, αλλά και η Diana Taylor στο The Archive and the Repertoire, γράφουν για το πώς η μνήμη περνά από το σώμα, σωματοποιείται, και πώς η μετάδοση της γνώσης περνά από σωματικές πρακτικές.
4. Joan Jonas (γενν. 1936), Organic Honey's Visual Telepathy (1972).
5. & 6. Hito Steyerl (γενν. 1966), November (2004) & Lovely Andrea (2007).
1942), Aids-Trilogie: Positiv - Die Antwort schwuler Männer in New York auf AIDS AKA Positive.
8. Tracey Moffatt (γενν. 1960), Nice Coloured Girls (1987).
Remember me remember me but, ah forget my fate.
10. Shu Lea Cheang, I.K.U. (2000). (2000). Εγώ γνώρισα τη Shu Lea Cheang στο U.K.I. Το Ι.Κ.U. Η Shu Lea Cheang είναι νομάς, οι κόσμοι που δημιουργεί εξετάζουν ουτοπικούς και δυστοπικούς τόπους, που θα μπορούσαν να ανατρέψουν τον κυρίαρχο, αλλά δεν είναι ποτέ ρομαντικοί ή νοσταλγικοί, όπως τους περιγράφει ο αγαπημένος μας Tim Stuttgen, στο βιβλίο του, Post Porn Politics: Queer Feminist Perspectives of Porn Performance and Sex Work As Cultural Production. Όσον αφορά για τις τεχνικές ποιότητες του έργου, διαβάζω: “Cheang's mix of sensation and suggestion is perfectly suited to the post-hypertext world of post-verbal storytelling. What's most intriguing about I.K.U. is its daring disposal of older forms and its unabashed effort to pioneer a visual text in which pornography and science fiction, film and video and computer, matinee and late-night, gallery and porn arcade, all merge into a single movie experience...”
Από τη Shu Lea Cheang γνώρισα και την Barbara Hammer. Διαβάζω στη σύντομη βιογραφία κάτω από το όνομά της: “Sadly reduced by hype machines to a pioneer of ‘lesbian cinema’ (whatever that means)”. Sadly reduced, sadly reduced.

The queer feminist archives are lakes around ellipses; they are specific bodies, specific traumas, cries, desires, spoken words that create parallel loci for different languages. A puzzle of images, often worn and incomplete, unwilling to form a composition. Frequently anonymous. As feminists and queer, in this collection, we perceive the abject, vulnerable, often invisible, often stigmatized bodies that presume and rebel against the white cisgender body of vanguards or blatantly circulate like a virus within them.
My choices for this 10-work collection do not suggest a historiography; they describe a feminist, autobiographical stroll through the links that have been landmarks of my own feminist and queer initiation in the production of images and can congregate in the UbuWeb collection. At times, the criterion was the specific creator rather than the work presented on UbuWeb. At other times language was the criterion, since this exhibition did not prioritize subtitling or the translation of the works chosen by the curators, impeding accessibility, even when the show is downloaded to exist physically among us on Syngrou Avenue. I know by experience that we do not all speak English. And the ones of us who do not speak English, French or German are even more invisible and hardly recognizable by hegemonic but also by alternative official history.
I studied at the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 1998 to 2003. There was only one cis woman professor with her own workshop in that school at the time, Teta Makri. In 1998, I did not know enough to realize that it was not a chance event but a result, according to Pierre Bourdieu, of the process where history is interpreted as nature through repetition, “history turned into nature”. During my studies, I do not remember if we ever wondered about the gendered condition of art history, nor whether we ever discussed art performance, video performance or experimental film. Such media are very popular and have been used as political and visual instruments by American feminists that we can encounter in this archive, from the 1960s-70s and on.
I look for Ron Αthey and find myself somewhere else, who is this Ian Kerkhof? I look for the performance I saw in Madrid in a festival in 2010; we see him on a glass pedestal, naked on all fours, combing his long blond hair while blood pours down this aseptic environment. It devastated me. Feminism does not belong to cis women and queer can only be feminist. I lose myself in the archive. I look for my relatives. MAKE KIN NOT BABIES, says Donna Haraway.
I will start with Valie Export (born 1940) and 1. Tap and Touch Cinema (1968). I read a Valie Export interview in the Angry Women (1991) magazine, where she described the performance Tap and Touch Cinema. She tied a box she had named screen on her bare chest. She said it was politically vital for her to use her own body as an art tool. One of the things that concerned her was to alter the cis male gaze, to desexualize the naked female body, familiar as she was with the surrealist painters, Dorothea Tanning and Leonora Carrington and how they worked with the female body, to eliminate it, render it invisible, decodify it (even if this was not the word used at the time). In a festival, where Export was to receive an award for her film Ping Pong (1968), she walked on stage with her box and expounded on her interactive cinema. She said that the state banned pornography but they could experience it for 13 seconds. She claimed that it was a feminist, a “mobile” film and participation ought to be public, in full view. She says it was a powerful experience, she and the public staring eye to eye. They all feared the encounter. “This box is the cinema and my body is the screen,” she said. Havoc ensued and the audience started shouting, “This is not cinema! This is nothing.” They started fighting and shouting, “Export Out! Export Out!” The lights went out. They hated this inversion, says Valie Export. They were enraged that they could have the object of desire but only on the object’s terms. The term was reversal of the point of view. The following day, the newspapers wrote, “We can no longer burn witches and we cannot burn film because it burns badly, so we cannot burn Valie Export.” At other times they laughed at me. We were living through a time of political and artistic upheaval.
Such a reaction is familiar to us all: causing laughter or aversion to the point of violence. Valie Export worked within the Viennese Actionism community (60s-70s), but she used more than just the body, and since she used the female body as a symbol, i.e. as a sign, a code and not merely as intellectual or biological means, she called what she was doing Feminist Actionism.
We found this copy of Angry Women in the garbage one morning as my friend and collaborator, Paola Pin, and I were walking around a neighborhood in Montreal, just before starting The body as a sound post gender instrument workshop, in 2014. It contains interviews by Κathy Αcker, Βell Ηooks, Diamanda Galas, Carolee Schneemann, Annie Sprinkle, Lydia Lunch, and Karen Finley. In the foreword, the curators write about anger as a socially forbidden emotion for female gender and they try to map its potential manifestations through this collection. The 70s feminist art movement in America adopted the performance as their principal political and aesthetic tool.

2. Karen Finley born (1956), The Constant State of Desire (1996). Karen Finley says about her work: “Many people feel like I do but keep things inside because public grief or revelation of emotions is not socially acceptable. When you do it, you will be considered vulnerable, deserted or unlovable. But I am capable of revealing my emotions so, in a way, this is my revenge. Revenge can be art.” In Lynda Hart’s Fatal Women, I read that Karen Finley’s work, characterized by aggressiveness, may belong in the protest tradition, which is one of the formats of female feminist discourse. Protest is a type of discourse that unfurls wrath and resembles a litany of injuries, which – according to Lauren Βerlant – does not lead to any change, since it is so focused on and vulnerable to phallocentric discourse. Nevertheless, Karen Finley’s performances effectively express a radical critique of patriarchy, bourgeois culture and the politics of sexual difference. As a gendered subject, she goes through the roles of housewife, mother, rape victim and family sexual violence survivor. With her graphic representation of sexual violence and her scatological anger, she attacks the gender/sexuality system and eventually cracks it open by historicizing it. According to Lynda Hart, Karen Finley’s autoerotic work threatens the cisgender model and places her outside the object of desire, it defeminizes her, which is the goal of all feminist performers. This aversion does not pertain to filth or health, but is a stance that unsettles identity, the system and authority, a stance that has no respect for borders, positions and rules.
3. Yvonne Rainer (born 1934), Hand Movie (1966). As I watch Yvonne Rainer’s video, I am fascinated and hopeful. It is a choreography of gestures. She was immobilized in a hospital ward when this film was made, as I read in the abstract. I translate freely from Queering Archives: A Roundtable Discussion (2015), a text I downloaded a long time ago from the queer internet. Ann Cvetkovich in An Archive of Feelings, and Diana Taylor in The Archive and the Repertoire, write about the way memory passes through the body, is embodied, and how the transmission of knowledge passes through embodied practices.
I decide to pick moving images from this archive, for this collection, I am trying to find in the images the traces of embodied knowledge, trauma, futurity and desire. Maurice Merleau-Ponty said that embodiment is a continuous process of arriving somewhere else, a movement towards, not a permanent material condition. It is the “here” in the future. 4. Joan Jonas (born 1936), Organic Honey's Visual Telepathy (1972). When Joan Jonas masquerades, discovers, reinvents and looks at herself in the mirror, from mask to mask, she transports me to this ritual process of movement I mentioned above.
The creative production of queer ways of recording and self-portraits is a gesture of care; we want to remember, to belong and to leave a beautiful trace behind for our own kind. We obsessively return, seeking justice. 5. & 6. Hito Steyerl (born 1966), November (2004) & Lovely Andrea (2007).
Paul Preciado writes in Género y performance, 3 episodios de un cybermanga feminista queer trans: “The artistic and political practices of performance are not located in the private body but they are always a displacement of the borders between private and public space. The performance is always the creation of political space.” 7. Rosa Von Praunheim (born 1942), Aids-Trilogie: Positiv - Die Antwort schwuler Männer in New York auf AIDS AKA Positive. In Rosa Von Praunheim’s documentary – a part of a trilogy on the HIV/AIDS epidemic – we find archive material from interviews, demos and extracts from various visual interventions. Preciado writes, “We had to wait until the 80s, when, as a response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, several groups decided to appropriate the insulting term queer,” which is greek has been translated as έκφυλος and ανώμαλος and positions the subjects it defines outside the human sphere, “to change it to a tool of social critique and cultural intervention.” Asserting the political nature of the whole audiovisual representation, one of the first Act Up slogans was, “not another image set outside its political context.”
8. Tracey Moffatt (born 1960), Nice Coloured Girls (1987). The (feminist queer) audiovisual material is incomplete, frequently worn, in some cases even the sound is missing. Tracey Moffatt reexamines dominant narratives through her own lived experiences of racial difference, she reinterprets them and attempts to rewrite history. She investigates the area between and beyond the dipole good/bad girl, white/black, master/slave, past/present. Women, in her testimony, are presented as survivors, inventive, entertaining and companionable, through a poetic, encoded, embodied film discourse that manages to deconstruct victim identity. In this attempt at revisiting history, we see the way that images, as historical representations, construct identity (class, race, gender) but also how reappropriating historical narrative can breed new meanings, new images and bridges that explain the continuity between then and now and dispute and defeat stereotypes. The film uploaded in the UbuWeb archive is without sound; I did not remember whether it had sound or not and it was only when I reached the end that I confirmed that the sound was missing. I searched through the rest of the web. In the first viewing, due to the absence of sound, I entirely missed the voice of the good colonial/captain/savior, that had been constructed through the archival logbook. I also missed the discourse of the three women; while the narrator is comprehensible in English via subtitling, i.e. via a voice readable but not audible, the three indigenous women communicate in a language that is untranslatable, private, and therefore safe. The film is available online with sound on Vimeo.
9. Isaac Julien (born 1960). In the archive, we find testimonies that turn into science fiction or speculative fiction narratives, about how colonialism, slavery, state and gender violence are embodied in culture, in sexual fantasies and practices. José Esteban Muñoz defines as queer something that is not yet here, but it may be distilled as an ideal from the past and used to visualize the future. The film The Attendant (1993) was shot on the premises of a real museum that is dedicated to the struggle against slavery and used to be the house of a white Englishman who became a champion of the abolition of bondage in England and its colonies. In the film, this collection of the white man’s archival material is in the charge of the black guide/guard of the museum – The Attendant. The reappropriation of the museum space by Isaac Julien, the revival of historical images through parody, the passage from theater to museum, Stuart Hall looking at a picture, a travel through time and body via the story of the whip, make this film intensely defiant. Remember me remember me but, ah! forget my fate. A non-consensual past, race, class, sex, slavery. Elizabeth Freeman and Jennifer Tyburczy agree that the use of sadomasochism does not symbolize slavery, not is it an extension of the history of violence to the present day, but it is a complex performance, where Isaac Julien invites whites and blacks to examine the traumatic stories that are encoded in our interracial sexual desires, without abandoning them. As Jennifer Tyburczy writes in Sex Museums, the whip is not just a whip, it is the symbol of the transatlantic slave trade, but also of the leather culture, where the meanings of both are linked in the body of The Attendant and its reappropriation by him. In this film, the power of potential repetition (redo) though consensus takes the form of hope.
10. Shu Lea Cheang, I.K.U. (2000). Shu Lea Cheang has worked with desire, technology and sexuality. Among other things, she is concerned with gender and race and constructs hyperconsumerist, hybrid worlds that work via strange systems of exchange. I ask Shu Lea Cheang if she knows which of her films is on UbuWeb, I see her name on the list, but I cannot open the link. She tells me she is not aware of UbuWeb, but that she would be very happy to have me curate her work. I reply that I want to do it but the link does not work. She says, “If you correct the spelling of my name in the url, it does.” http://www.ubu.com/film/cheang_iku.html. Shu Lea Cheang is a cyber feminist hacker, whose name is not white. The film I eventually found on this link is I.K.U. (2000). I met Shu Lea Cheang in U.K.I. (2009), which is its sequel. I.K.U. is a queer science fiction porn, written and directed by Shu Lea Cheang and it starts where Blade Runner ends, starring porn celebrities and people of the night. The script involves viruses, replicas, black-marketed orgasm and vested interests of the multinationals; the body becomes a hard disk filled with orgasmic information, consumable, collectable, marketable. More specifically, the film cites the arguments of the 90s netart, the cyberfeminist manifesto of the VNS. “We are the virus of the new world disorder rupturing the symbolic from within, saboteurs of big daddy mainframe, the clitoris is a direct line to the matrix.” Shu Lea Cheang is a nomad, the worlds she creates investigate utopias and dystopias that could subvert the mainstream, but they are never romantic or nostalgic as they are described by our beloved Tim Stuttgen, in his book Post Porn Politics: Queer Feminist Perspectives of Porn Performance and Sex Work as Cultural Production. The U.K.I., sequel to I.K.U., was live cinema starring ourselves, the sex-positive feminists, an open noise jam on Shu Lea’s initial script, which is also an archive of the Barcelona’s postpornography movement as well as my personal archive of sexual feelings and friendships. Shu Lea Cheang told me that the script for her most recent film MILK (2017) had been ready for over ten years, but she had found no production company to finance it. When it finally came out, most of the money came from the friendly community by crowdfunding. Shu Lea Cheang’s work is strangely collaborative and potentially archival. She is also a former member of the open media collective Paper Tiger, which can be found in this archive, as well. As for the artistic standard of the work, I read, ““Cheang's mix of sensation and suggestion is perfectly suited to the post-hypertext world of post-verbal storytelling. What's most intriguing about I.K.U. is its daring disposal of older forms and its unabashed effort to pioneer a visual text in which pornography and science fiction, film and video and computer, matinee and late-night, gallery and porn arcade, all merge into a single movie experience...” (http://rhizome.org/editorial/2015/may/26/iku-experience-shu-lea-cheang-phenomenon/). Politicizing the above technical reading, we can add that science fiction has been a feminist tool of choice, since the beginning of the century.
I came to know Barbara Hammer through Shu Lea Cheang. I read I brief biographical note under her name. “Sadly reduced by hype machines to a pioneer of ‘lesbian cinema’ (whatever that means).” Sadly reduced, sadly reduced. The curator/ archivist who wrote the comment cannot fathom the weight and anguish of the lack of image or difficulty of access to it, or the courage and risks involved in defending it. I desperately seek escape from straight normativity, defined not as sexual practice but as a way out of death politics, i.e. the performance of hegemony. Barbara Hammer will unfortunately not be make this list.
